The Centre for Digital Built Britain is a partnership between the Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and the University of Cambridge to understand how the construction and infrastructure sectors could use a digital approach to better design, build, operate, and integrate the built environment.
SNC Lavalin, a fully integrated professional services and project management company with offices around the world, is leading the way in assessing these skills across their staff globally, and has started with a pilot of 1000 staff and plans to assess more of the organisation over the next 12 months.
We need a major concerted effort as a country to establish basic digital literacy in our population. This will help us collect and manage higher quality data and information, benefit from new technologies and tools and make better, more informed decisions on how we interact with the world around us.
Data can only be truly transformative if we can collect it effectively and, crucially, agree on how we share and use that data to create the best outcomes for everyone. In other words, we all need to be talking the same language.
Sir John Armitt Chair, National Infrastructure Commission
Based on the CDBB Skills and Capability Framework the SNC Lavalin Digital Skills Assessment covers 12 competencies, and intended to support a diverse set of stakeholders across the built environment.

The Digital Skills Assessment aims to benchmark the existing skills in the SNC-Lavalin workforce and provide the resultant data to plan resources to support the development of digital skills over the next few years.
Since comaea is already used in SNC Lavalin to manage competencies for around 5000 project managers, the new Digital Skills Assessment was easily set up and made available to a targeted pilot group. Comaea is already fully integrated into the HR system and staff access comaea using single sign-on, making rolling out additional skills and competency assessments is quick and easy.
The Digital Skills Assessment easily co-exists in the comaea platform with the project management assessments (APM & PMI) and Licence to Manage accreditation process that SNC Lavalin have in place, and the completed assessment data can be analysed through the manager dashboards. The data is also output to excel for further analysis and reporting.
